Agra. Amid the controversy over forced religious conversions, 3 men from Firozabad were placed under arrest for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl and forcibly converting her to Islam. After the alleged conversion, the minor girl was married off to one of the arrestees.
As per media reports, the police, after receiving a complaint from the minor girl’s father, rescued her from a house in Hasmat Nagar within Ramgarh police station and arrested the three accused. Police said the prime accused, identified as Saleem (21), used to work in Gujarat’s Bharuch, where the minor girl’s father, a native of Jaunpur district ran a canteen. On June 6, Saleem brought the minor to the house of one of his relative in Firozabad, reportedly after luring her. In Firozabad, Saleem, his father and their relative forced her to change her religion to Islam. Thereafter, Saleem married her.
“Saleem used to work as a labourer in Bharuch. He was a regular customer at the canteen run by the girl’s father. He lured the girl and brought her to his relative’s house with the support of his father and a relative,” a report by The Times of India quoted SSP Ashok Kumar as saying.
Based on the complaint lodged by the minor girl’s father, the police arrested the accused and safely rescued the girl. A case has been registered sections 363 (kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage), 368 (wrongfully concealing or keeping in confinement), 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code, section 3/4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and section 3/5 (1) of the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Ordinance.
SHO Anoop Kumar said the minor girl, in her statement, confirmed that she was sexually assaulted and forcibly converted, adding that she was sent for medical examination. Further investigation into the case is underway.
