Assam – Ambubachi Mela Commences at Kamakhya Mandir

The annual Ambubachi Mela at the historic Kamakhya Mandir in Guwahati, began today, marking the celebration of the yearly menstruation of goddess Maa Kamakhya. Organized by the Assam government and the Kamakhya Mandir Management Committee, the event has seen extensive preparations to ensure the comfort and safety of the expected influx of devotees.

Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah confirmed the collaboration of various government departments in the festival’s preparations. Notably, no VIP passes will be issued for temple visits on June 26 and 27, when the temple doors reopen to the public.

Kabindra Prasad Sarma-Doloi, the head priest of the temple, announced that the Pravritti ritual would be conducted at 8:45 AM on June 22, followed by the temple’s closure for three days and nights. The Nivritti ritual is scheduled for June 26, when the temple will reopen, and regular rituals and puja will resume.

Support from the government and district administration includes security, transportation, and food provisions for the attendees. Last year, the Ambubachi Mela attracted approximately 2.5 million devotees, and this year, the number is expected to rise. Kamakhya Mandir, situated atop Nilachal Hills, is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths in Bharat, making it a significant site for devotees from across the country.
