“Chitagni” – Seva Bharati’s mobile cremation system operational at Churalmala, Wayanad landslide disaster site

Spread the love

The death toll in Wayanad’s Churalmalai landslide has crossed 100. The bodies are still being recovered. Due to the incessant rains, not only the rescue operation but also the burial of the recovered bodies are being hampered.

Seva Bharati’s mobile mortuary system has been made operational at Chitagni Churalmala to dispose of these dead bodies.

For the economically disadvantaged people in Kerala, it is very difficult to cremate the body in the traditional manner after the death of close relatives and loved ones. There are so many people that it is almost impossible to prepare a traditional pyre for cremation at their premises.

First of all, it is difficult to prepare a pyre according to the custom in the case where the house located in two or three cents of land and does not even have a sufficient yard.

The second reason is the proximity of many houses in places like colonies where houses are next to each other and places that get flooded during monsoons.

Seva Bharati’s cremation system has also been used by Christian communities where there is sometimes insufficient space in the church to cremate the dead bodies according to religious rites. The Mobile Cremation Unit is a fully LPG powered. The cremation can be completed in about 2 hours.

The special feature of this is that one can cremate one’s relatives in their own homes with dignity, following all the traditional rituals and can pay due respect to the love given to them while they were alive. The public acceptance of this project has been overwhelming.
