Chennai. The Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed a public interest litigation petition for a CBI probe into the June 18 murder of Hindu Munnani Tiruvallur district secretary Suresh Kumar.

The petitioner, R. Krishnamurthy, also sought payment of Rs.10 lakh in compensation to the bereaved family.

Mr. Krishnamurthy said Hindu Munnani and BJP leaders were being targeted in Tamil Nadu. The police, including the Special Investigating Team of the CB CID, had not made any breakthrough in almost all the cases. A single person could not have committed the brutal murders; there should be a network behind them. Many things needed to be unearthed. The State police might not be able to trace the real culprits. Hence, the case should be transferred to the CBI for a proper, free and effective investigation.

The First Bench — of the Acting Chief Justice, Satish K. Agnihotri, and Justice M.M. Sundresh — said the petition was based on newspaper reports and bereft of material particulars. Therefore, it was not inclined to entertain it.

The court said it did not know how the petitioner concluded that the Ambattur police, under whose jurisdiction the murder took place, was not conducting the probe properly.
