Kerala – Food poisoning in Baptism ceremony at Mallappally; 100 fall ill, one in critical condition

Pathanamthitta, Kerala. Many people were admitted to the hospital due to food poisoning in Mallappally. Those who participated in the baptism ceremony of a local resident’s child have got affected by food poisoning.

The ceremony was held on Thursday (29th December, 2022). About 100 people attended the event. Those who returned after eating from there were experiencing physical discomfort. Many people sought treatment at the hospital due to diarrhoea and vomiting. After a large number of people came to the hospital, an investigation was conducted and it became clear that the poisoning was caused by the food eaten during the baptism ceremony.

The affected people have been admitted to various hospitals in the district, where they are currently undergoing treatment.  The condition of one person who is being treated at the hospital is critical. The food items were delivered by a catering team from Chengannur.

The Kerala Health Minister Veena George has ordered an enquiry into the matter, and the Food Safety Commissioner has been instructed to conduct the probe and submit a detailed report.

The police said they filed a case against the catering service agency. Food samples were collected and sent for testing, the police said.
