Post-Poll Violence – After ‘attack’ in Jadavpur, NHRC team to visit Malda and Murshidabad on July 6,7, 8

New Delhi. The team constituted by the NHRC will probe the incidents of post-poll violence during the multi-phase West Bengal Assembly elections held this year. According to a fact-finding team, there were 15,000 incidents of post-poll violence in West Bengal in which 25 people were killed and 7,000 women were molested.

Vice-chairman of National Commission for Minorities Atif Rasheed and a member of the team constituted by the NHRC will look into the post-poll violence in West Bengal. The team will visit the affected areas in Malda and Murshidabad from July 6 to interact with victims.

The multi-phase West Bengal Assembly elections in March-April were marred by sporadic incidents of post-poll violence.

Before this, Rasheed had alleged that he was attacked in Jadavpur when the NHRC team went to the state to investigate the post-poll violence. The team met victims of the post-poll violence in the state that was swept by the TMC in the 2021 Assembly elections.

On Friday, the West Bengal Assembly that met for the Budget session on Friday witnessed Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar cutting short his inaugural address as Opposition BJP MLAs stormed to the Well of the House, holding placards and sloganeering over post-poll violence in the state.
