Rajasthan police has lodged a case against a 60-year-old caretaker of Ajmer Dargah for allegedly harassing and pronouncing triple talaq on his 26-year-old wife, reports India Today.

According to the report, the case is believed to be the first such case in Rajasthan after the enactment of the law to punish the practice of triple talaq.

Initially on Tuesday (06 August) night, the police lodged the FIR under section 498-A of IPC, dealing with cruelty against married women. However, after seeking legal opinion, the police added sections of The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act on Thursday (08 August).

The woman accused the police of taking no action on her earlier complaints about the alleged atrocities by her husband Salimuddin. The police, however, denied the charge.

“I met him through a common friend. He made several promises to me at the time of marriage but later started torturing me. I gave several complaints to the police but no action was taken,” the woman told mediapersons.

Ajmer’s Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarita Singh apprised that the FIR was lodged with Dargah police station.

“She has alleged that her husband pronounced triple talaq. She also named some witnesses to it and this is being verified. The FIR was registered as soon as she gave the complaint,” ASP Singh said.

The police recorded the woman’s statement on Thursday (08 August). However, no arrest was reported till the evening.

As per the police, the two married in 2017 and a month after their marriage, according to the woman, Salimuddin started harassing her.
