Tablighi Jamaat – Links with terror outfits?

Tablighi Jamaat, the global organisation of Islamic missionaries, the biggest carrier of Covid-19 infection in India, is said to have a long history of ties with Pakistan-based banned terror outfits like Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM).

The HuM terror group is known for hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814 in 1999. The founder members of this group were members of Tablighi Jamaat, as per Pakistani security analysts and Indian investigators.

HuM was formed in 1985 who participated in the jihad with the support of Pakistan against Soviet forces to dethrone USSR-allied regime in Afghanistan. As per intelligence estimates, over 6000 Tablighis were trained in HuM terror camps in Pakistan, stated TOI.

Subsequently with Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) terror group, HuM operated in Kashmir, taking lives of hundreds of civilians. The HuM cadre eventually joined the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit of Masood Azhar.

It is also believed that Tablighi Jamaat had also involved in the burning of 59 Hindu Kar Sevaks in the 2002 Godhra train torching incident in Gujarat.

However, these members travel in India freely and perform their proselytisation activities. Tablighi Jamaat also includes members from several other countries.
