The US Congressional Senatorial Committee has successfully passed a resolution acknowledging Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India.

The resolution received strong support from Senators Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, and Jon Cornyn of Texas. Additionally, Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) cosponsored the resolution.

This legislation reiterates the United States’ recognition of the McMahon Line as the internationally recognised boundary between China and the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It rejects China’s claims that significant portions of Arunachal Pradesh belong to them, which aligns with the People’s Republic of China’s increasingly aggressive and expansionist policies, as stated in a media release.

“Committee passage of this resolution affirms that the United States views the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as part of the Republic of India – not the People’s Republic of China – and commits the US to deepen support and assistance to the region, alongside like-minded international partners,” said Senator Merkley, who serves as the Co-Chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China.

Meanwhile, Senator Hagerty highlighted the importance of standing in solidarity with strategic partners, especially India and other Quad countries, as China continues to pose significant threats to the Free and Open Indo-Pacific region. He stated that countering the Chinese Communist Party’s territorial ambitions in areas such as the South and East China Seas, the Himalayas, and the Southern Pacific requires a united front, according to an official statement.
