Kerala – CPM panchayat member molested 15-year-old boy after mock drill; Increase in POCSO cases in state

Kozhikode. Culprit identified in the case of molesting a 15-year-old boy who returned from a disaster mitigation mock drill in the district. The accused is Unnikrishnan, a CPM leader and ward member of Mavoor panchayat. The complaint is that he sexually assaulted the boy in the ambulance and in the car. Unnikrishnan sexually assaulted the boy after a mock drill conducted by the district administration on a taluk basis. A case has been filed by the Mavur police POCSO department in the incident.

The incident took place in the afternoon. The complaint is that the driver of the ambulance that was brought for the Mock drill, sexually assaulted him in the vehicle and then in his own car.

A state-wide disaster mitigation mock drill was organized in all four taluks and district levels under the leadership of the National Disaster Management Authority and the state government. The mock drill was held at Mavoor panchayat in Kozhikode. It is reported that the 15-year-old was sexually assaulted while returning from this event.

Highest number of cases in Thiruvananthapuram and Malappuram

It is reported that the number of POCSO cases have increased in the state. A total of 3729 POCSO cases were reported in the state this year. Last year it was 3559.The number of reported cases has been increasing in the state for two years.

Thiruvananthapuram district has reported the highest number of cases this year. 475 cases were reported in the state capital. 450 cases have been reported in Malappuram district, 368 cases in Ernakulam, 350 cases in Kozhikode, 322 cases in Kollam and 307 cases in Thrissur. Even though the law requires the POCSO cases be completed within one year, there are cases in the state that have been pending for years.
