The University of Kerala has banned the controversial title ‘Intifada’ from its Youth Festival following several protests. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal, issued an order to remove the title from the Kerala University Youth Festival 2024. After several protests and demands from ABVP, the order was released by the Vice Chancellor. ABVP filed a complaint with the Kerala High Court demanding the removal of the name ‘Intifada’.
In the order, the VC specified that the title ‘Intifada’ should not be used in any posters, notices, or social media related to the University festival.
Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal stated that the explanation provided by the University Union regarding the title was not satisfactory.
Two days ago, ABVP approached the Kerala High Court, arguing that the term ‘Intifada’, is originally associated with the Hamas-Israel war, should not be used as the title name of the University Cultural and Arts Festival.
The VC’s decision follows the High Court’s intervention. In response to ABVP’s petition, the High Court issued notices to the Governor, Kerala University Vice Chancellor, and Kerala University Union.
