Kin expose holes in media story

Sumathi Amma, the mother-in-law of Maoist sympathizer Kanaka Durga who entered Sabarimala clandestinely with the help of police, saw support pouring in for her for allegedly “bashing up” her daughter-in-law. The frail lady is accused of physically assaulting Kanaka Durga when she came to her house. Her husband and mother-in-law did not allow Kanaka Durga, who allegedly came with CPI (M) supporters and police and tried to barge into the house.

Kanaka Durga’s claim was dismissed by her brother Bharat Bhushan, a CPI (M) activist, who said his sister along with the party cadre were indulging in hooliganism. Upset with the Marxist party’s support to such activism on Hindu places of worship, Bharat Bhushan said he won’t allow his sister to enter his house. Bhushan said Durga’s mother-in-law did not attack his sister and there was only a minor scuffle. “It was Durga who attacked the mother-in-law. This is a drama enacted by my sister and CPI (M) workers,” he said.

Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha leader who posted a video with the Sumathi, the frail old woman, said Kanaka Durga and pro-Left media were spreading canards. “It was Kanaka Durga who came with CPI (M) cadre attacked the old mother. What media say is not correct. Can you imagine this old frail lady could even lift a plank as the media reports suggest? We will extend all support to the old mother in her legal battle,” he said while panning the camera to a reclining Sumathi Amma who was admitted in a local hospital with injuries on her back.

According to the relatives, they were not aware of Durga’s Sabarimala plans. She left the house saying there was some official work at Thiruvananthapuram. They came to know about her plans through media.
