Guwahati.

Assam has the proud distinction of possessing the first rendition of the Valmiki Ramayan in any of the Bharatiya language with ancient Kamrup’s Madhab Kandali Ramayan – a significant contribution to the cultural and literary heritage of our country. Written in the 14th century by Madhab Kandali, this version of the Ramayan is the first complete translation of Valmiki’s Ramayan into Assamese.

Madhab Kandali was a revered saint-poet from Kamrup, Assam. His Ramayan not only translated the original epic but also incorporated local flavours, customs, and idioms, making it resonate with the Assamese populace. The work has been instrumental in promoting the teachings of Lord Ram and the ideals of dharma in Assam and the broader northeastern region of Bharat. Madhab Kandali’s Ramayan stands as a testament to the assimilation of Hindu epics into regional cultures and languages, enriching the tapestry of Bharat’s diverse literary landscape.
