Medical College pharmacy has been closed for few days due to running out of stock
The patients of Kozhikode Medical College are suffering due to the government’s financial crisis. There is a severe shortage of medicines at Kozhikode Medical College. The pharmacy, which is next to the Medical College, has been closed for the last few days due to running out of stock. Patients undergoing treatments such as dialysis and cancer therapy are struggling to get necessary medicines.
The reason for the current crisis is that the suppliers have stopped supplying medicine due to eight months of outstanding payments. Suppliers have taken a firm stance, refusing to resume the supply of medicines until their dues are settled. Furthermore, they have warned that even the supply of surgical instruments, including stents, will be stopped if outstanding dues totalling Rs 30 crore are not cleared by March 31.
The government’s failure to settle payments for life saving tablets, surgical equipment, and fluids has led to mounting frustration among suppliers. Many patients at the Medical College have become victims of the government’s cruelty.
Reports indicate that the state government owes 8 months’ worth of arrears to drug companies. Due to the non-payment, medicine suppliers ceased supplying drugs to the pharmacy on the 10th of this month. The drug companies had previously written to the Health Minister requesting payment of the outstanding dues. However, no action was taken, leading the pharmaceutical companies to halt distribution of medicines even to cancer patients.
As a result, cancer and dialysis patients are suffering. This situation has caused significant hardship for patients of Kozhikode Medical College, who now face the burden of purchasing medicines that previously cost Rs. 8,000 but now amount to Rs. 30,000.
